Context and objectives

Context:

This Conference forms part of the activities taking place during the Spanish Presidency of the European Union 2010.

Its aim is to promote an active ageing so that older persons achieve an active and satisfactory life, fully integrated in their own environment, as well as developing solidarity between generations.

The Conference will start on April 29th in order to hold both the “European Day of Solidarity between Generations” and the Conference on the same day. A large amount of the contents and some of the complementary activities are focused on highlighting this special day and solidarity between generations.

Objectives:

• Highlight the importance of health as the basis to develop an active ageing.
• Promote the launching of preventive plans to avoid illness and impairment in order to increase the quality of life and delay the appearance of illnesses in the elderly.
• Identify the key approaches for elderly people to achieve an active ageing and independent life.
• Promote the development of inter-generational relationships and solidarity between generations.
• Celebrate the European Day of Solidarity between Generations.
• Present best practices on ageing well at an European level.
• Present proposals in order to improve active and healthy ageing in EU member states.

Side events

• 29 April 2010: Guided visit to the Monastery of St. Millán de la Cogolla, and followed by an official dinner in the of the Monastery.
• 30 April 2010: Lunch in the winery «Dinastía Vivanco», followed by a visit to the Museo de la Cultura del vino.
